Earthquake in Haiti - Trauma Recovery

There is a lot to be done to rebuild Port-au-Prince after the massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti, on Tuesday, January 12.

Our partner AMURT Haiti has focused on trauma recovery.

The main project at the moment are Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) which provide a safe environment for children to regain confidence and overcome trauma.

MDGs - Millennium Development Goals

The Foundation has joined the efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by World leaders at the UN Millennium Assembly in September 2000.

HERE ARE THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS:

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
By 2015, reduce by half both the proportion of people living on less than $1 a day and the share suffering from hunger.

2. Achieve universal primary education
Ensure that by 2015 all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling.

3. Promote gender equality and empower women
Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015.

4. Reduce child mortality
By 2015, reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five.

5. Improve maternal health
By 2015, reduce by three-quarters the maternal mortality rate.

6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other communicable diseases
Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other major diseases by 2015.

7. Ensure environmental sustainability
Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs, and reverse the loss of environmental resources. By 2015, cut in half the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and sanitation. By 2020, improve significantly the lives of 100 million slum dwellers.

8. Develop a global partnership for development
• Develop an open trading and financial system that is rule-based, nondiscriminatory and include a commitment to good governance, development and poverty reduction.
• Address the special needs of least developed countries to include reduced tariffs and quota free market access, enhanced debt relief, and more generous development assistance for countries committed to poverty reduction.
• Address the special needs of small island developing states and landlocked countries. Make debt sustainable, increase youth employment, and provide access to essential drugs and new technologies.

Earthquake in Abruzzo, Italy

We have received the following report from our partner organization, AMURT (Italy):

Earthquake in Abruzzo - Let us rebuild a school in L'Aquila - "Scuola Elementary di Pettino di L'Aquila"!

We have started fund raising to rebuild an elementary school in the area hit by the earthquake. The name of the school is "Scuola Elementare Mariele Ventre di Pettino di L'Aquila". Before the earthquake the school had 400 children. The work will start soon after the technical work.

When the initial emergency relief phase to save lives will end and the authorities will have a better idea of the situation. We will take up a project to rebuild one school in the area affected by the earthquake.

The local authorities will be consulted for a school that needs our assistance. We have previous experience in other areas affected by similar catastrophes.

We are also forming a team of psychologists to assist the people traumatized by the event.

Floods in Haiti - 2010

Haiti is a land hit by various natural disasters on a ongoing basis.

In 2010 an earthquake devastated Port-au-Prince and the country has not yet recovered from its effects.

The end of summer is marked by severe flooding caused by the various hurricanes that pass through this Caribbean Island.

A few years ago, several storms in the course of two weeks left the northern part of Haiti flooded affecting several hundred thousands people.

The cyclone front brought heavy flashfloods and mudslides submerging large urban areas with a devastating long-term impact. During Hurricane Jean in 2004 only in Gonaives 2,500 drowned in the first day of the disaster.

To help Haitians prepare for this hurricane season we have partnered with AMURT Haiti.
